Diagnosis of Lipedema

Generally, no tests are required for a proper diagnosis of lipedema, listening to complaints with a physical examination is enough. We can even make an accurate diagnosis with online consultation with your pictures, especially for the foreigner patients. You can use the “Lipedema Evaluation Form” for this purpose. We plan the treatment and schedule your surgery online. Upon arrival to Istanbul, Dr Demirtas will see you at our clinic for the final evaluation the day before surgery.

Planning the Operation

Single session of VASER Liposuction is usually enough for treatment of stage 1 and 2 lipedema patients. We generally prefer to focus on liposuction only, during the surgery. But sometimes simultaneous operations are required, like using the removed fat for breast augmentation or facial rejuvenation. Other optional procedures are breast reduction, arm lifting and abdominoplasty, whenever indicated. Thigh lifting is technically possible only one year after liposuction but generally not required.

At the Hospital

You will stay at the hotel for the night before surgery. On the day of surgery, you will be hospitalized and basic tests for anesthesia will be performed, including a Covid test. Dr Demirtas will see you at your hospital room and make the drawings according to your surgical plan. The operation will be performed under general anesthesia and will last 3 to 5 hours, depending on the extent of your surgical plan. You will awake in your room with your leggins dressed. You will begin to drink and eat in 3-4 hours. To make sure that you will have a comfortable night, all medications will be given through iv route and you will have a bed rest for the night. In the morning, your doctor will see you and you will be mobilized by the hospital staff. Hospital stay varies between 2 and 4 days and mainly depends on your pain treshold. Discharge time will be decided with consensus of both you and Dr Demirtas. You will be having a shower at the hospital before discharge and your leggings will be changed.

After Surgery

You will be prescribed some medications during discharge. You will use a pain killer for a few days, an antibiotic for a week, an anti-aggregant for a month, an anti-edema capsul for a couple of months. You will be able to reach your doctor whenever you wish. You can have a bath as frequent as you wish after discharge. The stitches will dissolve in a few weeks. A healthy nutrition plan will be your priority for one year, with the help of a specialist if possible. You have to drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day. Another imperative duty is the regular exercise at this postoperative period. Our suggestion is swimming or pilates. You will wear your leggins day and night for one month and during daytime for the following two months.

Leaving Istanbul:

After discharge, you will stay at the hotel for another couple of days. Because you are allowed to fly one week after surgery.
